REPAIR COMMUNITIES

In some parts of the world, repair has always been a service offered in the street. But even in countries where such services no longer existed, they are coming back in major cities, thanks to the new repair communities.

Fixers’ Collective NYC is a group that began in 2009 as part of the Mend exhibition at Proteus Gowanus in Brooklyn, and continued as a Project In Residence at Proteus, to pay attention to the need to repair objects. In 2010, after a Kickstarter campaign, the collective became a permanent activity. Fixers’ Collective is a social experiment against planned obsolescence, holding a mend-and-fix meeting on the third Thursday of each month.
